Prepare for Debugging

A debugger allows you to inspect a running program, the DataFlex Debugger is part of the Studio. This lesson shows how to prepare for debugging.

Start Debugging

Most debugging is performed by inspecting variables and properties inside source code while a program is paused. You pause a program by adding breakpoints to lines of source code. When a program executes in the debugger and a breakpoint is encountered, the program pauses before executing that line of code. This lesson shows how to get started with debugging.

Using Breakpoints

When the program is running and a breakpoint is encountered, the program enters break mode. When the program is in break mode, all debug windows are updated with current information, and enabled. Setting and executing breakpoints is perhaps the single most important step in debugging a program. This lesson shows how to use breakpoints.

Locals, Globals, Call Stack Windows and useful actions

While debugging several useful windows show in the Studio; for example the Locals, Globals and Call Stack windows. This lesson shows the use of these windows and some useful actions while debugging.

Watches Window

The Watches window lets you view anything from simple variables to complex expressions. The Watches window is often used as a complement to the Local/Global Variables windows. You can add variables/expressions that you wish to track over the course of the debugging session, or that you wish to find quickly without having to sort through a bigger list in the Local/Global Variables windows. This lesson shows how to use the Watches window.

Conditional Breakpoints

A Condition Expression can be applied to any breakpoint. Each time the breakpoint is encountered during execution of your program, the expression is evaluated: If the expression evaluates to True, then the program enters break mode; if False, then the program continues without breaking. Data Dictionary Properties

While in the DataFlex Debugger you can view any Data Dictionary property. This lesson shows how to use Data Dictionary properties in the Debugger.

Tables Window

The Database Tables window lists all of the database tables that are open in the project you are debugging. This panel uses a treeview to list all of the tables and the columns. The two columns are Name and Value. This lesson shows how to use the Tables window when debugging.

Message Tracing

Message tracing lets you create a history of messages. Since messages are really procedure and function calls, a message trace can be thought of as a call stack history. Messages are displayed in a tree view hierarchy. You can trace messages as they execute in the program being debugged. This lesson shows how to use message tracing while debugging.

Debugging WebApps

You can debug Web applications/Web Services as well as Windows applications in the Studio. When debugging a web application, the Studio runs the program and also launches a web browser window so you can control the web application program being debugged. This lesson shows how to debug WebApps.
